If you've already tried the standard fixes for bloating, food sensitivities, and digestive issues — more fiber, better hydration, moving your body, cutting out sugar, gluten, or dairy — and you're still struggling, there's one piece of the digestion puzzle almost nobody talks about: how your body is actually built to take food in. In Human Design, this is called Determination, or more simply, Digestion. It's part of what's known as the Primary Health System (PHS), and it maps the exact conditions — such as temperature, environment, light, sound, etc. — your digestive system needs in order to work well. Most digestive advice stops at diet and lifestyle. This guide goes one layer deeper: the common, evidence-based causes of digestive issues, plus what the Human Design system can add once you've ruled those out — including all 12 Human Design digestion types, a real client case study, and how to find your own Human Design determination type even if you don't know your exact birth time.

Key Takeaways

  • Most digestive issues trace back to diet, hydration, stress, food intolerances, or an imbalanced gut microbiome. If you've addressed all of that and you're still struggling, the Human Design system offers a way of feeding your body you might not have yet considered.

  • In Human Design, Determination (also called Digestion) is part of the Primary Health System. It describes the specific conditions — such as temperature, environment, light, sound, etc. — your body needs to process food and information properly.

  • There are 12 possible digestion types in total, with six paired qualities — Appetite, Taste, Thirst, Touch, Sound, and Light.

  • Your determination is calculated from your exact birth date, time, and location. It's fixed for life and appears near the top-left arrow on your Human Design chart.

  • Determination is one of four Variables in a Human Design chart, alongside Environment, Perspective or View, and Motivation.

  • Human Design is a powerful system for self-understanding, and experimenting with it is crucial to find out what works for you. It is not a replacement for medical care.

Common Causes of Digestive Issues

Quick answer: Most digestive issues — and gut health more broadly — trace back to some combination of diet, dehydration, stress, food intolerances, medication side effects, or an imbalanced gut microbiome, with a smaller share coming from a diagnosed medical condition. For symptoms that are persistent, a healthcare provider can rule out anything that needs medical treatment before you look anywhere else.

  • Diet. A high proportion of processed food, added sugar, and too little fiber is the most talked-about cause, and for good reason — it's genuinely common.

  • Dehydration. Water helps move food through the digestive tract and keeps stool soft; even mild, chronic dehydration can slow digestion down.

  • Stress. The gut and brain are in constant communication through the vagus nerve. Chronic stress can slow digestion, disrupt gut bacteria, and trigger or worsen bloating, cramping, or irregular bowel movements.

  • Food intolerances and sensitivities. Gluten, dairy, and certain fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs) are common triggers for a portion of the population.

  • An imbalanced gut microbiome. Antibiotics, illness, and diet can all disrupt the bacteria that help digest food and regulate the immune system.

  • Medications. A number of common medications list digestive symptoms as a side effect.

  • Underlying medical conditions. A smaller share of digestive complaints traces back to a diagnosed condition — IBS, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or an autoimmune condition affecting the gut, among others. These need medical diagnosis and treatment, not just a lifestyle fix, so ongoing pain, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, or any sudden change in digestion is always worth bringing to a doctor first.

Everything in this article is meant to sit alongside medical care, not replace it. If you've already worked through this list — you drink enough water, you eat healthy, you move your body consistently, you've ruled out anything requiring medical treatment — and you're still struggling, there's a piece of the puzzle almost nobody mentions.

Human Design Determination in Action: A Client's Story

It was a leadership coaching session, and my client had just mentioned, almost in passing, that she'd been struggling with digestion for years. She was already moving on to the actual topic of our session when I stopped her. My instinct told me to ask for her birth data and her permission to glance at her Human Design chart. "Honestly, Arevik, I don't believe in this stuff," she said. "But I trust you — go ahead." I looked, and I knew what I was about to tell her might make her uncomfortable.

"According to your Human Design chart," I said, "you need to eat one ingredient at a time. A soup or a salad with ten different things mixed together is genuinely too much for your digestion to process well." It was the first time I'd worked with someone with this particular determination type, so I wasn't sure how she'd react. She laughed. "I was definitely like that as a kid. But I couldn't exactly eat one thing at a time at family meals." It was a bittersweet moment — how often we already know, as children, exactly what's correct for us, and how often we learn to override it just to fit in. What I was describing to my client is called Consecutive Appetite in Human Design — one of twelve qualities that make up what Human Design calls Determination. Here's what all twelve of them actually mean, and how to find yours.

What Is Human Design Determination (Digestion)?

Quick answer: In Human Design, Determination — also known as Digestion — is part of the Primary Health System (PHS), first mapped out by the founder of the Human Design System, Ra Uru Hu. It describes what specifically your body needs to properly process both food and information: for example, what kind of temperature, sound, or light aids vs. hampers your digestive process. It appears near the top-left arrow on your chart. There's a real, well-documented relationship between your gut and your brain. The vagus nerve runs directly between the two, and the gut has its own nervous system — often called the "second brain" — complex enough to operate somewhat independently of the brain itself. As Harvard Health notes, the majority of the body's serotonin is produced in the digestive tract, not the brain. Your specific determination type in Human Design is essentially a map of what your digestive system needs in order to work smoothly. Get it wrong consistently, and it may contribute to the kind of digestive discomfort — bloating, sluggishness, brain fog after eating — that a lot of people struggle to pin down. Determination doesn't stop at food, either. In Human Design, "digestion" describes how you take in and process anything — nutrients, but also ideas, conversations, and experiences. That's a big part of why people who start eating according to their Determination report clearer thinking, not just a calmer stomach. One quick clarification before going further: your Determination type is different from your Human Design Type (Generator, including Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor, or Reflector). Type reveals your specific way of moving through life with the least amount of resistance; Determination describes your ideal eating and information-processing conditions. Everyone has both, and each is calculated based on your birth data.

12 Human Design Digestion Types (The Six Determination Pairs)

Human Design Determination explains how your body is designed to take in and process food, information, experiences and any other input from the external world. There are 6 pairs — Appetite, Taste, Thirst, Touch, Sound, and Light — each with 2 variations, making up 12 Determination types in total.

What is Appetite Determination in Human Design?

Appetite determination in Human Design is related to how many things your digestive system can take in at once.

What is Consecutive Appetite Determination in Human Design?

Consecutive appetite determination in Human Design means that your digestive system works best when you eat one-ingredient meal at a time — for example, eating oats at breakfast, chicken breast at lunch, then carrot salad in the evening, or eating one-ingredient snacks throughout the day, like one apple, then after a while a banana, etc. — rather than a mixed plate. A soup or a salad with several different ingredients stirred together can genuinely overwhelm your digestive system. (This is the same digestion type behind the client story above — eating one ingredient at a time isn't a preference for her; it's how her digestive system is built to process food.)

What is Alternating Appetite Determination in Human Design?

Alternating appetite determination in Human Design means that your digestive system works best when you alternate or go back and forth between different foods, without mixing them. For example, you can have a plate with 3 different ingredients: broccoli on one side, chicken breast next to it and some carrot salad on the other side. The best approach for your digestive system is to eat a small portion of broccoli, finish it, move to the chicken breast, then the carrots — then go back to broccoli and repeat the sequence. Continue until everything on your plate is gone. The idea is to not have two ingredients in your mouth at the same time. For both, the underlying principle is the same — eat like our hunter ancestors would: simple ingredients one at a time, no processed foods or added spices. If you crave salt, just put some salt on your palate and savor it. I understand that it sounds too rigid, but that's how your digestive system is built. You don't have to be perfect. Start small: try to cut down the number of ingredients as much as you can. For example, eating a meal with 3 ingredients is not ideal, but it's much better than mixing 10 different ingredients. As you experiment and see positive results, you will be much more motivated to eat the way you are designed to.

What is Taste Determination in Human Design?

Taste determination in Human Design is related to how discerning and selective your digestive system is about the foods themselves.

What is Closed Taste Determination in Human Design?

People who have closed taste determination in Human Design are the pickiest eaters. It might be weird, but people who have this determination can literally know in advance if they will like the food or not, without even putting it into their mouth. They do best sticking with a small range of foods they are already familiar with and like. If your child has this specific determination, please don't push the spoon into their mouth if they show resistance toward that food. It may look like closing their lips firmly or spitting the food out. As an adult, you may push yourself to try unfamiliar food just to appear "open-minded." Please don't do that. It can cause real trouble for your digestive system.

What is Open Taste Determination in Human Design?

People who have open taste determination in Human Design are also quite selective about their food. But unlike people with closed taste determination, these people need to first try the food to be able to see if they like it. They may enjoy going to new restaurants, exploring new flavors and recipes. Another characteristic of taste determination in Human Design is that these people align best with the gatherer archetype — designed to eat locally and seasonally, thriving on what's available nearby rather than food imported from far away. They do best eating what's naturally in season, rather than the same fruits and vegetables all year round.

What is Thirst Determination in Human Design?

Thirst determination in Human Design is related to the specific temperature of the food your digestive system is best suited for.

What is Hot Thirst Determination in Human Design?

Hot thirst determination in Human Design means that your internal system runs cold, which means you need to balance it by taking in food above your body temperature. For example, warm, cooked meals like soups, along with warming spices like ginger or cinnamon — help warm your system. Cold or raw food can interrupt your digestion. You may also benefit from warm baths, hot stone massages, and a warm environment around you.

What is Cold Thirst Determination in Human Design?

Cold thirst determination in Human Design means that your internal system runs hot, which means you need to balance it by taking in food below your body temperature. For example, after cooking your meals, let them cool down before you eat them. Also include a lot of raw foods and cooling ingredients in your diet, like cilantro, mint, or lime. You may benefit from cold showers, and compared to other people, you may be much more comfortable in cold climates. Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors may not fully support this approach, because keeping the stomach warm, for example by drinking warm water first thing in the morning, is one of the general recommendations of TCM. That being said, both Human Design and TCM fully acknowledge the existence of individual differences. That is why you need to experiment with these recommendations and see if they work for you or not. People with Thirst determination tend to prefer liquids over solid meals, for example, soups, smoothies, teas, etc. People with hot thirst determination benefit from warm drinks, whereas people with cold thirst determination benefit from cold drinks.

What is Touch Determination in Human Design?

Touch determination in Human Design is related to the amount of external stimulation in the environment where you are eating.

What is Calm Touch Determination in Human Design?

Calm touch determination in Human Design means that you best digest food in a quiet, peaceful environment, free of external stimulation or distractions. Many people with this determination benefit from setting up their environment before they start their meal, for example, turning off the TV, putting their mobile phone on airplane mode, etc. What works best for people who have calm touch determination is eating alone or in silence. These people need to avoid eating at family meals where everyone is talking, or at busy cafes, restaurants or noisy places in general. This may sound quite antisocial, but the internal system of people with calm touch determination is already overstimulated, and the only way to balance it is to make sure the environment they eat at is not stimulating at all. I have also noticed that people with calm touch determination don’t feel satiated when they eat in stimulating environments and tend to eat much more than they need and gain weight as a result.

What is Nervous Touch Determination in Human Design?

Nervous touch determination in Human Design means that you best digest food in stimulating, dynamic environments, with at least some activity going on around you while you eat — a conversation, noises from the street, something playing in the background. If you have this digestive type, your internal system is understimulated, and the only way to balance it is to make sure the environment you eat at is stimulating enough for you. You may like moving around while you eat, and others may consider you restless. But the reason is that you subconsciously try to create some form of stimulation, when you don't have enough stimulation around you. Busy cafes, restaurants or noisy places in general work great for people with nervous touch determination.

What is Sound Determination in Human Design?

Sound determination in Human Design is related to how the auditory environment affects your digestion. If you have this determination, then you are incredibly sensitive to the sounds around you: if the sound feels off while you eat, it will have a direct impact on your digestion.

What is High Sound Determination in Human Design?

High sound determination in Human Design means that you best digest food around sounds with high volume or frequency. Keep in mind that it is not just about high volume — it has to be the high volume or high frequency that feels exactly right for you. Not every noisy place, loud song, crowded cafe or restaurant is right for you — some may feel quite disturbing or dysregulating for your system. You need to tune into your body and check whether you feel irritation or resistance toward that sound, or whether you feel at ease.

What is Low Sound Determination in Human Design?

Low sound determination in Human Design means that you best digest food around low volume, more soothing sounds — or simply less noise overall. You can test this for yourself: go to a noisy cafe and eat something. Tune into the sounds around you while you eat. Notice how you feel, and check for a headache or tension in your body. Yes, sometimes, it is best to do the exact opposite of how you are designed to eat, so that you can see the difference firsthand.

What is Light Determination in Human Design?

Light determination in Human Design is related to the amount of light in the environment — and, notably, the time of day — that best supports a person's digestion.

What is Direct Light Determination in Human Design?

Direct light determination in Human Design means that you best digest food between sunrise and sunset, in bright, natural light. During the safe sun-exposure hours, having the sun's rays touch your skin is deeply nourishing for your system. If you eat inside, try to sit near the window to soak up the sun and support your digestion. If you can, eating outside in the park or in the garden during the safe sun-exposure hours will be ideal for you. Be mindful of your eating habits during winter. As the sun goes down early, you need to arrange your meals with shorter intervals. Do not eat after the sun goes down, and give yourself enough time to digest the food before you go to sleep.

What is Indirect Light Determination in Human Design?

Indirect light determination in Human Design means that you best digest food between sunset and sunrise, with little light around you. This is often the quality people notice fastest, because it runs directly against standard nutrition advice ("don't eat late," "always eat breakfast early"). For someone who has indirect light determination, a forced daytime eating schedule will cause their digestive system a lot of trouble, no matter how organic and healthy their diet is. I have also noticed that people with indirect light determination tend to be nocturnal beings. They feel energized at night, tend to work night jobs and experience high quality of life, just because they are living true to their nature.

Frequently Asked Questions About Human Design Determination

How do I find my digestion type on my Human Design chart?

Human Design determination or digestion is an advanced area of the Human Design system. Some websites may tell you what your determination is; however, take into account that it's not always accurate. A professional analyst using specialized software can generate your accurate Human Design chart and tell you what your Human Design determination is.

Do I need my exact birth time to find out my Determination in Human Design?

Yes, your exact birth time is needed to accurately identify your Human Design Determination. Unlike the general Human Design chart which can identify your Type, Strategy, and Authority with approximate time of birth in most cases, the type of Human Design Determination changes quite quickly, so the most accurate time of birth is necessary.

How can I find out my Determination in Human Design if I don't know my exact birth time?

Finding your Human Design Determination without the exact birth time is tricky. However, there is a real way around it. Get a professional reading, which will help you understand your Type, Strategy and Authority first. Then apply what you have learned and start paying attention. You will see that the more you decondition and start living according to your Type, Strategy and Authority, the more aligned you will become with your unique nature. What will happen is that you will naturally be drawn to the way of feeding your body that is correct for you. It will not happen overnight — it will most likely take years — but it's 100% worth it. Another option is to work with a professional Vedic astrologer and get a birth time rectification.

Is my digestion type the same as my Human Design Type?

No, and this is a common mix-up. Your Human Design Type describes your aura and your strategy for navigating life. Human Design determination is a separate layer that describes your ideal eating and information-processing conditions. Both are calculated independently from the same birth data.

Why don't I relate to my Human Design Determination at all when I read the description?

This is common, and it doesn't mean the description is wrong. Determination is one of the deepest, least-conscious layers of your Human Design chart, and for most adults it's been buried under years of conditioning — family meal habits, cultural food norms, what we were taught was the right way to eat. A lot of parents unknowingly push their child away from the way that's naturally correct for the child to take in food. That is why Human Design-based parenting is so fundamental to any child's wellbeing.

Can Human Design help with digestive issues or autoimmune conditions?

Human Design can offer a possible explanation for symptoms that don't fully resolve with standard advice, but it isn't a diagnosis. If you're eating against your natural Determination — the wrong temperature, or environment for your system — that mismatch can plausibly show up as digestive discomfort. For persistent or severe symptoms, see a doctor first to rule out anything that needs medical treatment.

Is it actually okay to eat late at night if I have Indirect Light determination in Human Design?

Yes — this is one of the more counterintuitive but consistent patterns in Human Design. Conventional nutrition advice generally discourages late eating, and that's reasonable guidance for most people. But someone who has Indirect Light Determination in their Human Design chart often reports better energy, digestion, and mental clarity when they eat between sunset and sunrise. This is a great example of why generic advice so often misses the mark. Keep in mind that the Human Design system is not a dogma. You need to experiment with it to see if it works for you.

Does my Human Design digestion type ever change?

No. Your Human Design digestion type is calculated from your exact birth date, time, and location, the same way the rest of your chart is — so it's fixed for life. What can change is how closely you're actually living in alignment with it, and how clearly you notice the difference when you do.

Ready to Find Your Human Design Digestion Type?

Most advice about digestion stops at diet and lifestyle — and for a lot of people, that's exactly where the answer is. But if you've covered the basics and you're still dealing with bloating, discomfort, or stomach issues, your Human Design Determination is worth a look — not instead of medical care, but alongside it. It offers a specific, testable answer to a question most people never think to ask: not just what you should eat, but how, when, and where your body actually processes food properly. The fastest way to find out the answer is to look at your Human Design chart.
